The last few months have seen seizure of sophisticated arms and ammunition from border areas adjoining North Bengal.
Intelligence agencies have also taken serious note of use of bombs in almost every political disputes, including factional ones. The sheer volume and quality of these weapons have worried the sleuths. National Intelligence Agency (NIA) sources said that multiple teams have been searching locales in North Bengal for the past few days.
Sources said that the central agency is trying to ascertain source of this huge cache of weapons and is also looking into any possible link with terrorist organisations.
General elections are less than a year away and the agencies are trying to ascertain if some proscribed organisation is trying to foment trouble in the border areas under the garb of political violence.
Central intelligence sources said that authorities suspect that more than one terrorist outfit has taken to weapon smuggling and selling in black market as means of funding their operations.
They suspect the role of a few KLO operatives acting as conduits. Reportedly, terror outfits like National Democratic Front of Bodoland, Manipur Peoples Liberation Army and Garo Liberation Army may be involved in the arms trade. Sleuths suspect that even neo-JMB of Bangladesh may have some role to play.
Chirang (Assam), Chapainbaba Ganj (Bangledesh) and Birganj (Nepal) are believed to be main centres of these activities.
Sources in BSF intel wing which covers North Bengal frontiers areas suspect that areas like Malda and North Dinajpur has dumps of sophisticated firearms.
Intelligence agencies have already sent a report, expressing grave concern on the influx of weapons in Coochbehar, especially in and around Dinhata.
Central intelligence agencies are in the process of compiling a list of probable suspects. Most of them belong to or are residents of Jaigaon in Alipurduar, Bamangola in Malda, Gitaldaha and Sitalkuchi in Coochbehar, Goalpokhar in North Dinajpur and Kokrajhar in Assam.
Intel agencies are investigating their roles and would also be looking into their bank accounts and transactions too.
